An energy-efficient HVAC system not only ensures the home stays cool in the summer and warm in the winter, but it will help you save energy. Saving energy, in turn, means you’ll notice savings on your energy bills, and a bonus is that you’re also helping the environment. It’s a win-win! Here are five ways to get the most energy efficiency from your HVAC system:

1. Use a programmable thermostat

A programmable thermostat allows you to manage your energy while you’re away from home. During the winter months, you can save energy by lowering your thermostat up to 10 degrees while you’re asleep or have left the house. In the warmer months, you can turn the temperature up a few degrees higher for energy savings.

2. Replace Old Air Filters

An old or dirty air filter can prevent airflow which is why it’s important to replace these regularly. It can also mean that the filters are working extra hard in your home. The frequency of replacing an old filter will depend on the exact make or brand, but generally, air filters could need a tune-up every 30 to 90 days.

3. Prevent Air Leaks

This can be done at little to no cost. It can be as simple as rolling up a towel and blocking air from underneath doors where it can often leak out. For a more advanced approach, weather-stripping is an option.

4. Check for Proper Insulation

Properly insulating (or weatherizing) your home will prevent unseen leaks and seams. This will, in turn, reduce energy use and energy bills. According to the Department of Energy, proper insulation is important from the roof all the way down to the foundation.

5. Schedule Regular Maintenance

Maintaining a system and getting regular check-ups on your HVAC system is a good practice to ensure it is still operating efficiently and safely. In addition, it can prolong the life of your system.
